“The type of wood, the age of the wood, the thickness, the bracing inside. “Torres has a special place among luthiers of guitars,” he says. On other pieces by Fernando Sor, Erik Satie, Astor Piazzolla and other composers, Sakellariou plays an even older Torres guitar, La Leyenda (the legend), built in 1862. And that’s where the experience comes in when attacking the strings.” But no matter how beautiful an instrument is, you still have to get the tones out of it. “When I played ‘Paint it Black,’ you can feel those solid bass tones coming out. “That Torres guitar has a warm, firm tone and a beautiful bass,” Sakellariou explains. It was built in 1888 by Torres, a Spaniard considered the father of modern guitar making. On the album, he performs it on a guitar so rare and renowned that it has a name, La Novia, meaning “girlfriend” in English. “I created a piece that I believe can be played right next to Bach without any problem,” he says after taking his guitar from its case and demonstrating what he means by picking a few bars of the song’s distinctive melody. Sakellariou wasn’t planning on putting “Paint It Black” on the album, but he just happened to play his arrangement one day in the studio and everyone liked it so much that it found its way onto the record, becoming the most talked-about track.
